Some may say that organic food is just a trend; that people are looking for organic products only to be a part of the crowd. Others may say that we are becoming more aware of what is good for our health and our planet, and will present you a big list of reasons why organic is good for you. No matter what your reason for shopping organic, in Amsterdam there is a good range of shops and markets (and some really cool people) that bring these products as close to us as possible. Some of them are supermarket chains and others are small shops where you’ll find not only an array of fresh, wholesome goods, but also a community of friendly people dedicated to bringing these products within easy reach. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a newcomer keen on sampling the city’s best, we’ll guide you through the places where organic food isn’t a luxury, but a way of life in Amsterdam.
The best places to shop for organic products in Amsterdam:
Ekoplaza is a large chain of supermarkets with many locations in Amsterdam (and other cities). Ekoplaza is selling everything from cleaning products, cosmetics and food supplements to fresh fruit and vegetables. I like it for the well stocked super food section, the fruits, nuts, teas, sweets and cosmetics. And I love the Vanilla Rice Ice Cream, which I can only find in their shops. They also have Vitatas, a weekly veggie bag that you can pick-up in the shop.
Good for You has a good variety of organic products in two small shops in central Amsterdam locations.
De Aanzet is one of the first health food stores in Amsterdam. It sells biological vegetables and other products, cosmetics and organises workshops and also massages.
Little Plant Pantry is a minimal waste, plastic-free shop. They offer organic food ingredients without or with minimal packaging and cooperate with local artisan food producers. You can buy in bulk and bring your own container or use the free containers that they have in the shop. They also have a little restaurant where you can have amazing vegan food (and sweets!). You can read an interview with the owners of Little Plant Pantry here: Vegan Bulk Store in Amsterdam: Little Plant Pantry.
Simon Levelt amazing place for organic coffee and tea.
Odin — 100% organic and preferable biodynamic products. There are a couple of shops in Amsterdam, but you can order online as well. Vegetable boxes are possible and you can also become a member and have some extra benefits.
Unlimited Health – online store. It doesn’t sell fresh produce but has a great range of various organic products, supplements, superfoods, cosmetics and more.
Amsterdam markets where you can find organic products
A great source for organic produce in Amsterdam is the weekly markets. Although not all items are organic, most of their fruit and vegetables come directly from local farmers. It’s a pleasure to browse the stalls where you can find veggies not always available in supermarkets, along with fresh cheeses, mushrooms, and flowers. You can talk to the farmers and then go home with your bike overflowing with organic, fresh produce, the beet leaves bouncing from your bike’s bags as you cycle through the streets of Amsterdam.
Nordermarkt — each Saturday from 9.00 to 16.00. This is my favourite weekly market, but I might be biased because I lived close to it for a few years. You can find it in the beautiful neighbourhood of Jordaan, close to Noorderkerk and the famous apple pie shop Winkel43.
Haarlemmerplein organic farmers’ market — every Wednesday between 10.00-17.00 at Haarlemmerplein (I like to treat myself to a veggie burger here, now and then).
Pure Markt — organised a few times per month in beautiful locations: Frankendael Park, Amstelpark and Beatrixpark. Mostly ready prepared food, some fruit and vegetables and soaps, cheese, plants, seeds, jewellery, clothes and many more.
ZuiderMRKT — Saturday market with organic products.
Niewmarkt — Saturday Market in the city centre. Here you’ll find organic products, cheese, flowers, fish, and more.
Boerenmarkt Buikslotermeerplein. The place to buy organic vegetables, cheese and meat in Amsterdam Noord.
Let’s not forget that the usual supermarkets also have organic products on their shelves. As you can see, there are a lot of good places to go for organic products in Amsterdam; you just have to choose the one that’s best for you!
