Blue and Gold: 28 Photos from a Frozen Amsterdam

During the one week of magical winter in February, Amsterdam’s canals froze over, creating a breathtaking view, particularly under the golden light of the afternoon. It was a delight to walk along the canals, on the streets inundated with late afternoon light, where people and trees casted long shadows on the cobblestones and the brick walls.

Amsterdam seemed to have only two colours: blue and golden. How could I not take a thousand photographs of this beautiful view? At that time of the day, there were no more people skating; it was also towards the end of the skating period and the ice was becoming too thin. The canals were mostly quiet, being taken over in some parts by seagulls and a few children who were still playing on the ice. We walked from Amstel River to the city centre and back, just in time to see the sunset in my favourite place in the city. I was exhausted and slept like a baby that night, dreaming of ice and colours.
