International Women’s Day, celebrated in some countries and totally unknown in others, is set as March 8th. In Romania, my home country, this is a special and joyful day, also combined with Mother’s Day.

Although in the Netherlands March 8th is not special, I did celebrate Women’s Day in Amsterdam, together with other 13 Romanian ladies. It was a lovely evening at the Lokaal Café on Wibautstraat, where they did a good job of taking care of such a large group of people. We talked and laughed a lot, exchanged mărțișoare and had a nice dinner.

As you can see from the pictures, it was an evening of joy. I think this is a celebration worth having: a day to remember all the women in your life, thank them for their contribution to your upbringing and your current life, appreciate them for being strong or delicate, or both at the same time. You can tell me we should do that every day, but we all know very well that we don’t, or at least we don’t always express it in a good way, or bring flowers every day. So we need an International Women’s Day to remind us about all these things that, caught in the routine of our lives, we forget about.

Or it can be just another excuse for women to have a wonderful girls’ night out 🙂
