Spring cleaning on the canals of Amsterdam — thousands of bikes are removed from the water every year. With over 800.000 bicycles in the city, it’s inevitable that a large number of them end up in the canals, by accident or by the hand of an angry neighbour!

The Amsterdam Water authority is organising regular cleanings of the canal network, dragging the bottom for any debris. It’s fascinating to see them working and it’s also a reminder that if you swim in the canals in the summer, you do it at your own risk!
