The Healing Power of the Forest

…. It’s quiet — the birds are not singing as much as they used to do in the spring, and there’s no wind to make the trees talk. A layer of mist is covering the forest floor, making it look like a fairy tale image. From time to time, I hear a child yelling or a dog barking. My thoughts, spinning around in my head all morning, are now peacefully sitting there, almost asleep. I feel at peace with everything and everyone. This is the effect a long fore…

My favourite cherry tree

…I could drink my coffee under this tree every morning! It’s absolutely gorgeous — an 80 years old Japanese cherry tree that can be admired in the Huize Frankendael’s garden. Isn’t Spring great? Fresh green over the canals

…It’s spring and all trees in Amsterdam started to cover themselves with a layer of fresh green leaves. When the sun shines above them, a green light falls over the canals and the water takes on the colour of the leaves. I’ve never seen this kind of green light and must admit I’m totally in love! It gives me great energy and an optimistic mood. I tried to capture the beauty in some photos to keep it for the rest of the year….

Remembering how to relax, on a rainy Saturday

…in bed and read, I couldn’t wait to go outside. So I went out in the rain, walking around the lovely Haarlemmerbuurt neighbourhood. It was warm and there was no trace of wind, making my walk very enjoyable. I had a flavourful flat white at Toki, I went to the Noordermarkt for fresh spring herbs and honey, and then came home to do some gardening. The evening will be lazy as well, watching the new season of Sense8 while sipping fresh lemon balm tea…

Idyllic Dutch Villages: Warmond in South-Holland

…ouldn’t see the interior, nor admire the gardens. Huys te Warmont seems to spring out straight from the clear water of a lake that reflects it as a perfect mirror. From the edge of the park, you can see the polders and a few windmills. After that, I went for a stroll in the village. It was the cherry blossom time, so there was pink colour everywhere I looked, completed by magnolias at the end of their seasons. To give you an image of the village:…

Who Cares about the Pandemic When It’s Cherry Blossom Time in Amsterdam?

Every year, before tulips cover the fields, spring is announced in the Netherlands by the cherry blossom. There are a few spots in Amsterdam where you can admire beautiful cherry trees, but the best one is the little cherry orchard in Westerpark. The best place to enjoy the cherry blossom is the Japanese orchard in Amsterdamse Bos, but this park is not in the city (is just outside in the neighbouring Amstelveen), so it takes a bit more effort to…

Visiting Keukenhof — part 1

…illions of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths planted by hand year after year spring to life in an impressive display of colour and perfume. During my last visit I also wanted to witness the Bloemencorso (Flower Parade) that comes through Lisse — the town next to Keukenhof — with an eclectic show of flower-covered floats and cars. However the experience was less than stellar, mainly because the parade was late, the weather miserable (the single cold,…

First day of March

…On this sunny and very windy day, I went to Westerpark, searching for some signs of spring. There were a few, just enough to give me hope that the winter is almost gone now:…

Enjoying the Sunny Days in Amsterdam

…golden light covering the canals and the seed of the elm trees (so called “spring snow”) gently dancing in the light breeze. People are drinking beer and eating bitterballen on boats, picnicking in the park, enjoying the unexpected warm temperatures and every bit of sun. It’s May 2025 in Amsterdam, but it feels more like July. Summer is in a rush this year. I can’t say I’m not enjoying it, but some days I worry that we will get all the summer sun…
