It’s cherry blossom time in Amsterdam!

It’s that time of the year again, when the cherry blossom charms everyone and you meet all your acquaintances under the cherry trees! I didn’t go to Amsterdamse Bos to see the Japanese Garden, but I had my share of cherry blossom (and magnolia) in Westerpark last weekend. There are only a few cherry trees in the park, but they are enough to create a magical atmosphere for the few weeks when they are in bloom! Enjoy! Stay tuned for more and follow…

Things to do in April in Amsterdam: a wish list

There are many cool events happening in Amsterdam in April. Since the first half of the month I’m on holiday, I made my list only for the second part of the month, and looks like it will be busy.  The highlight of the month, for many people, will be King’s Day, on April 27. I’m not sure yet if I want to join the street party. After joining a few celebrations along the years, I like to stay away from the crowds now, to enjoy my free afternoon in a…

The Story of a Saturday Morning

The day started sunny and warm, with beautiful fluffy clouds and cherry blossom: It continued with dark clouds approaching (still beautiful) and a lunch with a good friend at Orloff, where we found refuge from the rain and hail.  Then it was sunny again, perfect for a walk and pictures under the cherry trees: Stay tuned for more and follow Amsterdamian on Instagram and Facebook for more stories about life in the Netherlands. Vegan Restaurant DopHert

Note: this restaurant is permanently closed now. With all the rainy days we’ve had lately, I’ve spent most of the time inside, cosying up on the couch, editing photos and reading. But yesterday I needed a walk and some fresh air, so I decided to go check the situation of the cherry trees from Westerpark: I can’t wait to see them in full bloom again! We still have to wait a week or two, but in the meantime there are other beautiful flowers to admi…

Life in Lockdown: Empty Streets in Amsterdam

Some days, you would hardly guess that Amsterdam is in lockdown. The streets are buzzing with people, markets are open and there’s even the occasional outdoor street party. But there are some days — moody weather, random Wednesday kind of days — when you are painfully reminded that things are not back to normal. When you walk on the streets of the city centre and you see a person here and there, walking with a grumpy face, avoiding the others. Pe…

Dutch sky

The Dutch sky is well known for its beautiful clouds. Many famous and lesser known painters illustrated the spectacular views of the Dutch sky in their work. Personally I think that the real Dutch sky is to be seen on the fields, in the countryside (and with the obligatory windmill in the background, of course). But in the few sunny days the Amsterdam sky can also be spectacular, not only for its clouds but also for its deep blue colour. Stay tun…

Saturday night

Last Saturday night was all about relaxing, drinking sangria and watching an amazing sunset. I met a friend at Puerto Pata Negra — the place to be for tapas, sangria and sunsets in Amsterdam, and we spent our evening talking and laughing, chilling after the hot day and marvelling at the fabulous colours of the sky.   Stay tuned for more and follow Amsterdamian on Instagram and Facebook for more stories about life in the Netherlands. April storm

The weather has been very capricious today — rain, hail, wind, sun and clouds were switching places the entire day. Even as I was on my way home in the afternoon, I couldn’t avoid a quick storm. However, while yesterday I decided to continue cycling in the rain and arrived home completely soaked, today I was a little bit wiser and hid under an umbrella and a narrow roof on a small street. As I was waiting for the rain to pass, I couldn’t help but…
