We started the year with snow. The first days of January brought snow to the Netherlands, bringing joy to those who were hoping to see it, but also transport chaos, as many trains and flights were cancelled.
Since I didn’t have to travel, I could only be happy to see a few centimetres of snow after a few years. The last proper snowfall was in 2021, when we were in lockdown because of the pandemic. I photographed the snow back then in the city of Alkmaar, but also visited Hoorn where people were skating on the natural ice, the Oudorperhout nature reserve, and the beach at Egmond aan Zee.
This year, I only took a few snapshots in Alkmaar. The snow wasn’t that spectacular this time, and definitely less than it was in Amsterdam and other places in the Netherlands. Still, it was beautiful to see the white layer covering the parks and the streets, and how everyone, young and old, was enjoying the weather.
