Visiting Keukenhof — part 1

They say Keukenhof is the most photographed place in the world, and after having visited it twice already, it is quite easy to understand why.

Open for only two months each year, the “Kitchen Garden” as the name translates is also the world’s largest flower garden.

Millions of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths planted by hand year after year spring to life in an impressive display of colour and perfume.

During my last visit I also wanted to witness the Bloemencorso (Flower Parade) that comes through Lisse — the town next to Keukenhof — with an eclectic show of flower-covered floats and cars. However the experience was less than stellar, mainly because the parade was late, the weather miserable (the single cold, rainy day in weeks) and the crowds upon crowds of tourists overwhelming.

Fortunately, the flowers and the park itself more than made up for it, and by the end of the day I added my share of shots to an already overflowing collection. “But wait, where are the flowers?” one may wonder after seeing the gallery below; don’t worry, they are coming in the next couple of instalments, for starters a few teaser photos of the garden and some of its highlights.

  1. I LOVE the Keukenhof, and like you have been several times so took some leave when the flowers were due to be at their best.
This year sadly the flowers still weren’t out during my holiday since Spring slept in in the Netherlands. I was back at work by the time the blooms were at their best.. maybe next year?!

    • Oh, what a pity that you took a day off and the flowers were not ready yet! I didn’t get to see Keukenhof this year; but I am determined not to miss it next year, and I really want to see it o a sunny day 🙂
