Enkhuizen is an old town situated on the IJsselmeer. In the 17th century it was a very important harbour-town of the Dutch East India Company, just like Hoorn and Amsterdam. Today Enkhuizen is a quiet, charming place, still hosting a large marina and a maritime museum (Zuiderzeemuseum). I was expecting it to be similar to Hoorn because they are close, but I was surprised to find different architecture and a different atmosphere. I liked Enkhuizen even more than Hoorn! The narrow streets and lovely houses, the boats, the fish shops, small details everywhere reminding you that you are close to the sea and there is even a ships-in-bottles museum (Flessenscheepjes Museum)!
It’s one hour away by train from Amsterdam, easy to reach and definitely worth a visit (or more). Here are some photos from my trip, to show you the beauty of this place:
