Remembrance Day

Once every year, on 4 May, the Dutch gather near the National Monument in Dam Square to pay homage to the memory of all civilians and members of the armed forces that died in conflicts since World War II.

Called “Remembrance of the Dead” (Dodenherdenking), the ceremony includes a military parade, marching bands and laying of wreaths; but most impressive are the two minutes of silence starting at 20:00 — respected by everyone, the silence makes it possible to hear the flags gently waving in the wind…
