As September approaches, the city of Amsterdam takes on a new, enchanting persona. Painted with hues of early autumn, the cityscape becomes a stunning backdrop for a myriad of captivating events and activities. Sweater weather creeps in (anyone else happy about that?), the leaves start to hint at a colour change, and the air whispers stories of the upcoming fall, infusing a unique charm into every corner of our beloved city.

In this curated list, I will guide you through the best that Amsterdam has to offer this September. So, tuck your summer outfits away and embrace the enthralling promise of September in Amsterdam!

Let’s dive into this curated monthly selection of things to see and do in Amsterdam in September 2024!

  • Amsterdam Fashion Week, on 3-6 September. This is an annual event that celebrates fashion through a myriad of expressions including runway shows, presentations and more.
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival, on 5-15 September. Every year in September, Amsterdam Fringe Festival presents a mix of theatre, performance and dance by new, emerging and untamed talent at locations throughout Amsterdam.
  • 24 Hours Oost. On 7 September you get to explore the Oost neighbourhood in Amsterdam and get to know hidden gems.
  • EuropArtFair 2024, on 6-8 September. Over 100 artists participate to this fair at Westergas where visitors get to meet the makers, admire and buy their work.

  • Amsterdam Map Fair on 7 September at Het Scheepvaartmuseum Amsterdam. The first Amsterdam old and antique map fair (Amsterdam Map-Fair) will be held at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam on Saturday 7 September 2024. At this fair, 30 national and international antiquarians will offer antique sea charts, maps, atlases, globes and prints for sale.
  • Echoes of Amsterdam – discover Amsterdam in this live concert in in the Waalse Kerk in the Red Light District, on 10 September.

  • Poeting Queer History – on 13 September at Pakhuis. A night to celebrate the rich tapestry LGBTQ+ experiences through the power of poetry.
  • Nederlands Theater Festival, on 5-15 September. It takes place for 11 days in 11 theatres in Amsterdam. You will have the chance to see the most beautiful performances of the season, especially selected by 7 professional juries in the Netherlands and Flanders. There will be theatre, cabaret, youth theatre, mime, performance, new makers and more.
  • Heritage Days (Open Monumentendag) – on 14 si 15 September. For two days, historical buildings and monuments all over the country are open to the public. This is your chance to see inside those beautiful canal houses or buildings that are not normally open for visits. Activities like exhibitions or concerts will take place in various locations.
Amsterdam School
  • Unseen Photo fair, on 19-22 September. This is an art fair dedicated to contemporary photography. Amongst its 65 exhibitors are established international photography and contemporary art galleries, as well as young up and coming initiatives.
  • Jordaan Festival. On 29,30 September and 1 October. A festival celebrating the Dutch culture and music in this iconic Amsterdam neighbourhood.
  • RE NATURE Festival – on 21-22 sept near Amsterdam, in the green oasis of the artist village of Ruigoord. It’s a weekend full of green inspiration with workshops, talks, walks, ceremonies, art, dinners, concerts, films & theatre. Two days of a programme for all senses. Just like the first edition of the festival in Den Bosch, this Amsterdam version is buzzing with inspiration from artists, designers, ecologists, indigenous knowledge, dreamers and doers.

  • Diana Blok – I challenge you to love me. Photo exhibition at Cobra until 29 September. This is an overview of the work of photographer and artist Diana Blok, who explored topics such as identity, gender, sexual diversity and culture.
