The Magical Light of a Winter Morning

…es of Amsterdam at moments when it shouldn’t normally happen: early in the morning, taking the long route to the office, or on foggy days and cold nights. If I don’t have the camera with me, I get bored of walking more than one hour in the city. The winter mornings, especially the sunny ones, have a special light. This is what we’re missing when we are in a rush to get to work, not paying attention to our surroundings: Next time, slow down and loo…

How to spend 24 hours in Amsterdam

Then I’d head towards the Dam Square, quickly admire the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk, take a few snapshots with the pigeons, and continue towards the canal belt area. In the morning, before the traffic on the canals begins, the water is still and it’s like a mirror reflecting the beautiful canal houses. I would be seen zig-zag-ing the bridges between the four…

The Story of a Saturday Morning

The day started sunny and warm, with beautiful fluffy clouds and cherry blossom: It continued with dark clouds approaching (still beautiful) and a lunch with a good friend at Orloff, where we found refuge from the rain and hail.  Then it was sunny again, perfect for a walk and pictures under the cherry trees: Stay tuned for more and follow Amsterdamian on Instagram and Facebook for more stories about life in the Netherlands, written by a real loc…

Saturday morning

Even a rainy winter day can be a great one, if you know how to spend it! This grey Saturday started well: a delicious cappuccino and an apple muffin at Headfirst Coffee Roasters, in the pleasant company of Amsterdamming, a visit at the Noordermarkt to buy spring flowers and cheese, then going home to cook something delicious for later. I hope the rest of the weekend will be as nice and cosy as it started 🙂 Stay tuned for more and follow Amsterdam…

Red Light District in a Different Light

…indows.  My friend and I were almost alone on the streets on that Saturday morning. Here and there we would encounter other people: two guys feeding the pigeons, someone cleaning a store window and other occasional passers-by. We would check each other with curiosity, each of us thinking what on earth is the other person doing at such an early hour in this part of the city. Even the seagulls (who were having a feast on the garbage bags not yet pic…

Amsterdam in Summer: A Photo Diary from Fifteen Years of Archives

…hen it breaks through. I’m not a morning person, I admitted as much in the morning light, back in 2011, but the few times I’ve caught the city at sunrise have been worth every alarm. One of them was an early morning in 2014, the streets still empty and the canals completely flat; I wrote then that it might become a habit. It did not, at least not until many years later. And then, every year, comes the moment I notice the first yellow leaves in lat…
